Walt Disney World is a fun place to take a vacation, but it's not for everyone. Some of us don't get into the whole Disney thing, not to mention the fact that it can be pretty expensive there. The good news is that there are about a billion non-Disney-related things to do in Orlando, and some can actually be fulfilling alternatives to the big theme park experience. That said, let's start with the other major theme parks, which include:
· SeaWorld: SeaWorld is relatively uncrowded compared with its mouse-eared counterpart, and it's also quite a bit less expensive. All in all, you get much more bang from your buck. Of course, it helps if you have an appreciation for the wonders of sea life. Not everyone gets into it, but it's fun if you love fish and sea mammals.
· Universal Orlando Resort: The Universal theme park rounds out the trifecta of major Orlando attractions. Located in a convenient area close to all the hotels, shopping, and dining on International Drive, the theme park contains several separate sections that focus on various themes relating to Universal movies. The brand may not be as recognizable as Disney, but you might be surprised by all the great movies that Universal has had a hand in.
· Gatorland: Gatorland may not have the flashiness or the square footage to match the bigger theme parks, but what it does have is a nice local flavor and a refreshing small-scale character that you might not find at the other places. As the name suggests, the focus here is gators, and you will see lots of them. It sort of is as scary as it sounds, but it's safe (and cheap).
Meanwhile, there are many very interesting museums in the Orlando area, including:
· Kissimmee Air Museum: Kissimmee is just a short distance from Orlando, and it's worth the drive to visit this air museum, which lets you get up close and personal with craft from throughout the history of aviation. You can even pay to ride in some of the old airplanes.
· Orlando Science Center: The Orlando Science Center is a great destination if you're looking to spend a relatively cheap day in the Orlando area. The dynamic and modern museum has an incredible range of exhibits relating to all branches of science. It's all quite kid-friendly, but teens and grownups certainly will not be bored.
Finally, there is tons of opportunity in the Central Florida area for fun outdoor activities. The possibilities are endless, but here are a couple of the best choices:
· Lake fishing: If you look at a map of the area around Orlando, one of the first things you'll notice is the abundance of freshwater lakes that dot the entire region. Many of these lakes are not accessible to boating, but just as many are. In spots such as Lake Toho, you can take fishing tours or rent a boat and go out on your own.
· Swamp safari: For anyone who doesn't live in the south, it's not too often that you get the chance to experience a real, live swamp. Florida has an abundance of them, and while the swamplands around Orlando can't match up to the untrammeled beauty of the Everglades, there are many interesting wilderness areas that you can explore.
